Description

Block walls weep because they’re built to. CMU is an affordable material precisely because it uses less cement — which leaves wide interstitial gaps that drink groundwater and hand it to your basement. Sealers alone can’t fix it: Bone Dry sealers work by reacting with alkali, and pervious block doesn’t carry enough to feed the reaction. The Bone Dry Block Wall system solves it in two steps — Block Wall supplies the alkali, and Original or Plus reacts with it to form a permanent moisture seal inside the block itself.

Below-grade block wall in section: where the barrier forms

Soil and hydrostatic water press against the hollow cores of a below-grade CMU wall. Bone Dry Block Wall is applied from the inside and penetrates deep into the block; in the Block Wall + sealer zone, alkali is deposited, reacted, and sealed — the barrier forms inside the block, before water ever reaches the room, keeping the finished basement dry.

Chemistry that needs a partner

Bone Dry Block Wall is a colorless, non-toxic, water-based blend of inorganic suspended solids. Sprayed on the interior face, it penetrates deep into the block, filling hairline cracks, small voids, and the interstitial spaces between matrix particles — and depositing the alkali the sealer needs. Then Bone Dry Original or Plus goes on while Block Wall is still damp, reacts with those deposits, and fills every small space in the substrate to form a permanent water barrier. The wall stays a wall; the barrier lives inside it.

Free alkali: what the sealer reacts with

Bone Dry sealers react with free alkali in the substrate. Poured concrete carries enough for the sealer to react fully; a pervious CMU block wall runs short and can’t fully react on its own. Block treated with Block Wall tops up the alkali for a permanent seal. (Qualitative.)

Application: built like a wall, bottom up
  1. Prep & mist — unpainted and clean; dampen with a fine water mist.
  2. Prime ×2 — saturate with 2 coats at 80–150 SF per gallon depending on porosity.
  3. Seal while damp — apply Original or Plus once Block Wall reaches damp.

Result: waterproof — a permanent barrier deep in the block.

Good to know: dampen the wall first with a fine water mist — damp, not saturated — then saturate with Block Wall from a hand-pumped garden sprayer, two full coats at roughly 80–150 square feet per gallon depending on porosity. Use it at full strength only. Time the sealer to Block Wall: apply Original or Plus when Block Wall reaches a damp condition. If over-application leaves white deposits, brush or flush them off with water before the next Bone Dry coat — accidental over-application won’t discolor the wall. Keep the surface above 45°F, and shield vegetation and adjacent finishes from overspray outdoors.

Can Bone Dry Block Wall be used on its own?

No. Block Wall comes with a primer to provide maximum strength in CMU concrete block applications.

How do I seal high-porosity concrete?

Why won't a regular sealer or waterproof paint fix my weeping block wall?

Block is pervious by design: it uses less cement than poured concrete, which leaves wide interstitial gaps that drink groundwater, and it does not carry enough free alkali for a penetrating sealer to react with. Paints sit on the surface and lift as water pushes from behind. The Block Wall system supplies the missing alkali with Block Wall, then seals inside the block with Original or Plus.

How much Bone Dry Block Wall do I need?

Two full coats at roughly 80 to 150 square feet per gallon, depending on porosity, applied at full strength with a garden sprayer or airless spray. Send us the wall square footage and we will size Block Wall and the sealer as one system.

Do I have to dig outside to waterproof a block foundation wall?

No. The Block Wall system is applied from the inside face of the wall. Block Wall penetrates deep into the block, and the sealer, applied while Block Wall is still damp, forms the barrier inside the block before water reaches the room.

Can I apply Bone Dry Block Wall over painted block?

No. Bone Dry Block Wall will not penetrate latex, polyvinyl, acrylic, or nonporous rubber-based paints. Strip the paint first so Block Wall can reach the block.

White deposits appeared after priming. Is something wrong?

That is over-application: Block Wall left excess solids on the surface. Brush them off or flush with water before the next coat or the sealer goes on. It will not discolor the wall.

Bone Dry Block Wall penetrates deeply into porous substrates where its active ingredients fill small cracks and voids and interstitial spaces between the matrix particles. These deposits will react with Bone Dry PCS to fill all of the small spaces within the substrate to form a permanent water barrier.

Advantages:

  • allows porous concrete materials to be internally waterproofed with Bone Dry PCS.

Limitations :

  • Bone Dry Block Wall is formulated solely for cement based building materials and does not effectively penetrate asphalt, metal or wood, brick or masonry
  • Bone Dry Block Wall will not penetrate acrylic or nonporous rubber based paints
  • Bone Dry Block Wall must be applied at full strength to attain the desired results
  • over application of the material may cause white deposits to form on the surface. These deposits should be removed by brushing and/or flushing with water prior to subsequent applications of BONE-DRY.

Composition:

Bone Dry Block Wall is a non-toxic, (water based) blend of inorganic suspended solids which extend throughout porous substrates to provide the additional alkali required to react with the Bone Dry PCS. Bone Dry Block Wall contains no organic materials or inorganic heavy metals. Bone Dry Block Wall is neither flammable or explosive and does not emit any harmful fumes.

INSTALLATION

Preparatory Work:
No preparatory work is generally required. However, if the surface is coated with heavy wax, thick grease, recently applied surface sealer, rubber or acrylic paint or other impervious material, remove such materials so that the Bone Dry Block Wall can reach the surface where it will be allowed to penetrate into the substrate. Accidental over application will not discolor the surface.

Method of Application:

  1. Dampen surface to be treated (do not saturate) using a fine mist water spray.
  2. Saturate the surface thoroughly with Bone Dry Block Wall at an approximate rate of 80 – 150 square feet per gallon, depending upon porosity of the substrate. Low pressure spray equipment, such as a hand pumped garden type sprayer works well for medium sized areas. For large areas, airless spray equipment is very efficient. Small areas can be effectively treated using a spray bottle.Brushes or rollers are not recommended because of the low viscosity of the Bone Dry Block Wall.Do not allow the Bone Dry Block Wall to pond or puddle on horizontal surfaces, as a white residue will likely form on the surface. Move the excess material from the low spots on the floor to the high spots with a squeegee, mop or broom. Any remaining material should be picked up with a wet vac or mop.The time for additional applications can be judged by observing the time it takes for the Bone Dry Block Wall to soak into the substrate. If Block Wall soaks in quickly, generally less than fifteen minutes after application, additional material should be applied.
  3. Bone Dry Block Wall will not penetrate latex, polyvinyl or acrylic based paints.Unpainted surfaces: Generally, no surface preparation is necessary.
  4. For surfaces such as basement and outside walls,follow standard procedures as described above.
  5. Oil, grease or acid conditions: Preliminary cleaning of the surface is necessary before Bone Dry Block Wall is applied. Heavy deposits may require scraping, followed by thorough cleaning with a commercial degreaser. After the surface has been cleaned, apply Bone Dry Block Wall until the substrate has been thoroughly soaked with the material.
  6. Allow the substrate to dry to a damp condition before applying Bone Dry PCS.

Precautions:

Bone Dry Block Wall should not be applied to glazed floor or wall tile, or glazed or hard-fired brick where the glaze will prevent the penetration of the material. However, Bone Dry Block Wall may be applied over these materials if the intent is to seal the grout joints. In such cases, after Block Wall has sufficiently soaked into the grout, remove all excess material from the surface with a wet vac, squeegee or mop. Wipe the surface with a damp cloth or sponge to remove any remaining film. This will greatly minimize the possibility of a white deposit or film from forming on the tile or brick.

Bone Dry Block Wall should not be applied to masonry structures having a mortar or grout containing a latex binder.

Bone Dry Block Wall should not be applied or stored at freezing temperatures. 45 degree minimum surface temperature.

If freezing occurs during storage, agitate the thawed material thoroughly to assure uniform solution.

During outside applications, care should be taken to protect vegetation and adjacent areas from direct spray or overspray.
