Sealing a New Concrete Pour: Cure and Seal in One Step

Speak With An Expert Today

When should new concrete be sealed, and with what?

With Bone Dry, sealing happens at placement, not weeks later. As soon as the slab can be walked on, one spray functions as the curing compound and permanently seals the concrete in the same pass — Bone Dry Pro for interior slabs going under flooring, Bone Dry Structural Sealer for exposed exterior flatwork. If you would rather not spray at all, the protection can ride in the truck: Bone Dry Pro Admix waterproofs the entire pour from the batch plant, and Bone Dry Corrosion Inhibitor protects the reinforcing steel from day one. Exposed warehouse floors take Li 200 Logistics, which is best applied to fresh pours and aids even curing.

Sealing at placement versus sealing later

Most moisture mitigation happens at the worst possible time: after weeks of cure and dry-down, after RH testing, and — when the slab fails — after an expensive coating and a retest. The conventional route runs pour, cure and dry down for weeks, RH test, mitigation coat, retest, then flooring. The Bone Dry route is pour, spray the same day, floor on schedule. The sealer penetrates deep into the fresh slab and reacts with free lime and alkali to seal the capillaries permanently, becoming part of the concrete; because it also functions as the curing compound, there is no second mobilization and no RH gate. The same logic applies outside: on new flatwork, Structural Sealer cures and seals in a single application, and the concrete goes into service with water and deicing salt kept out for good.

Which product for which new pour

The pour Use How it works
Interior slab going under flooring — spray at placement Bone Dry Pro Spray as soon as the slab can be walked on; functions as the curing compound; about 300–340 sq ft per gallon on broom-finished, troweled or profiled concrete (350–400 on burnished, polished or Etch-A-Crete-treated slabs); dries in approximately 6 hours, with 12 hours or overnight recommended before flooring (Quick Dry is always included); 25-year warranty as the Bone Dry Pro System
Interior slab going under flooring — waterproof in the mix Bone Dry Pro Admix 10–12 fl oz per 100 lbs of cement at the plant or in the truck, dosed separately from other admixtures; pour minimum 3 inches thick; no spray crew and no onsite moisture testing; lifetime flooring and roofing replacement warranty (onsite rep for pours over 20 yards)
Exposed exterior flatwork — sidewalks, lots, structures, driveways, plazas, curbs Bone Dry Structural Sealer One VOC-free application on the fresh flatwork cures and seals; water beads and salt stays on top; improved freeze-thaw durability; no recoat cycle
Exposed interior floor — warehouse, distribution, manufacturing, retail Li 200 Logistics High-solids lithium and nano-silica densifier; best applied to fresh pours, where it aids even curing; spray and leave, dries clear; traffic in 2–3 hours
Reinforced concrete anywhere steel meets salt — garages, bridges, coastal, pools Bone Dry Corrosion Inhibitor in the mix 28 fl oz per cubic yard; chloride-free; no change to slump, set, air, density, or permeability; 28-day compressive strength 23% higher than the untreated control (ASTM C39, 5,770 psi vs 4,690 psi); ASTM C1582 compliant
Residential garage or basement slab Bone Dry Plus or Original Formulated for new and existing slabs, interior and exterior; garden-sprayer application; 200–250 sq ft per gallon on broom-finished concrete, 300–350 on machine-troweled concrete, 350–450 on burnished or polished slabs opened with Etch-A-Crete

Choosing between spraying at placement and dosing the mix comes down to logistics: Pro needs no batch-plant coordination; Admix needs no spray crew. Both are also covered in Sealing a Slab on Grade Before Flooring. For the whole line, see the Bone Dry product selector.

Two routes to a dry slab

Pro Admix — in the mix Bone Dry Pro — at placement
Where it happens Batch plant or truck Sprayed on the fresh slab
Site labor None — avoids application labor costs One spray application
Coordination With the batch plant None — no plant involvement
Moisture testing Eliminated Eliminated (as a system)
Warranty Lifetime flooring and roofing replacement 25-year flooring replacement

Because Pro Admix is mixed through the load, the protection exists everywhere the concrete does: cut it, core it, or grind it and the fresh face is still sealed. A surface-applied sealer protects a reacted zone at the top of the slab. Both routes work; the admix simply makes the concrete itself the barrier. If Bone Dry Products determines an issue has occurred with the Pro Admix, Bone Dry Products will apply Bone Dry Pro Sealer at no additional cost to the owner and with no change to the lifetime warranty.

The ASTM C-309 question

Specifications often call for a curing compound by standard. ASTM C-309 covers liquid membrane-forming curing compounds. Bone Dry Pro and Structural Sealer penetrate the slab instead of forming a membrane, so the standard does not apply to them — used standalone, each achieves the results a curing compound achieves. Where a specification requires C-309 by name, a dissipating curing compound can be applied after the sealer is applied. On a Li 200 Logistics floor, a separate curing compound is not necessary; if your spec requires one, apply it after Li 200.

In the mix: dosing and mixing

  • Pro Admix. 10–12 fl oz per 100 lbs of cement (650–780 ml per 100 kg), added with the tail water at the plant or into the batch on site; when mixing on site, allow the mix to blend a minimum of 7 minutes before pouring. Always dose Pro Admix separately from other admixtures. Works in normal-weight and lightweight concrete; plan the pour at a minimum of 3 inches thick. Compatible with all resinous coating systems — profile the slab to CSP 3 first.
  • Corrosion Inhibitor. 28 fl oz per cubic yard at the batch plant or into the ready-mix truck, about 70 drum revolutions. Add to fresh concrete only, never to dry cement, and do not allow it to freeze in storage. A 5-gallon pail treats roughly 22 cubic yards; a 55-gallon drum about 250; a 275-gallon tote about 1,250.
  • Both in one pour. Dose the two admixes separately.

How to apply at placement

  1. Bone Dry Pro. As soon as the slab can be walked on, a low-pressure spray at about 300 to 340 square feet per gallon on broom-finished, troweled or mechanically profiled concrete, and 350 to 400 on heavily burnished, polished or Etch-A-Crete-treated slabs. No surface prep on a new pour — spray and go. It dries in approximately 6 hours, with 12 hours or overnight recommended before flooring; foot traffic and heavy equipment are permitted once the slab is dry to the touch. Quick Dry is always included; resinous flooring over Pro must be 100% solids over a CSP 3 profile.
  2. Structural Sealer. Spray the fresh flatwork with a 50% overlap, let it absorb 5–8 minutes, then spray a second pass only where the first soaked in; it penetrates, cures, and seals in that one application. Shield adjacent finished surfaces, glass, and vegetation from overspray. Dried overspray from any Bone Dry sealer can be removed with concentrated vinegar.
  3. Li 200 Logistics. Fully wet the slab without puddling — spread any puddles with a push broom — keep it wet 10–15 minutes, and walk away; it dries clear with nothing to remove, and the floor takes traffic in 2–3 hours. Compatible with reactive and resin bond breakers; shield adjacent finished surfaces from overspray. About 400–800 sq ft per gallon.

Where this applies: Sealing at placement is the route on new commercial pours; see concrete sealers for general contractors, concrete sealer specs for architects and specifiers and retail and commercial building concrete floors. See all the industries we serve.

As soon as the slab can be walked on. Bone Dry Pro (interior slabs under flooring) and Bone Dry Structural Sealer (exposed exterior flatwork) are sprayed on the fresh concrete the same day it is placed and function as the curing compound, so curing and sealing happen in one pass.

Used standalone, Bone Dry Pro and Structural Sealer each function as the curing compound and achieve the results a curing compound achieves. ASTM C-309 covers liquid membrane-forming compounds and does not apply to a penetrating sealer; where a specification names C-309, a dissipating curing compound can be applied after the sealer is applied.

Both produce a permanently sealed slab. Pro needs no batch-plant coordination and carries a 25-year warranty; Admix needs no spray crew, eliminates onsite moisture testing, and carries a lifetime flooring and roofing replacement warranty with an onsite representative for pours over 20 yards. Choose based on whose logistics are easier on your job.

Yes, but dose it separately from other admixtures. The same rule applies when Pro Admix and Bone Dry Corrosion Inhibitor go into the same pour — dose the two separately. The Admix TDS reports a 0.5-inch slump increase, initial set about 5 minutes sooner and no change to final set; the Corrosion Inhibitor TDS reports no change to slump or set time.

Bone Dry Structural Sealer, applied to the fresh flatwork as the curing compound — one VOC-free application that cures and seals, keeps water and deicing salt out, and never needs recoating. Existing residential driveways, patios, and sidewalks take Bone Dry Driveway Sealer.

Bone Dry Pro dries in approximately 6 hours; 12 hours or overnight is recommended before flooring, and foot traffic and heavy equipment are permitted once the slab is dry to the touch. Quick Dry is always included and there is no RH testing gate. The Bone Dry Pro System carries a 25-year warranty against moisture-related and bonding failures.

At the pour. Li 200 Logistics is best applied to fresh concrete, where it aids even curing and a separate curing compound is not necessary. It reacts with free lime to form additional C-S-H in the wear surface, hardens and dustproofs the floor, and dries clear with no brooming, flushing, or residue removal.
